Cultural Crossroads: Miami 2003

ATMI/CMS/SEM Joint Meeting

October 1-5, 2003

Join the Association for Technology in Music Instruction, Society for Ethnomusicology, and The College Music Society for a special joint conference in downtown Miami, Florida, from Oct. 2-5, 2003. We’ll be staying at the beautiful Hotel Intercontinental which is adjacent to the shops and restaurants of Bayside Marketplace on Biscayne Bay, and just a short cab ride away from South Beach. With an overall theme of "Cultural Crossroads," the conference promises to provide excellent opportunities for cross disciplinary dialogue in a vibrant cultural setting.

This meeting will bring together a broad spectrum of music scholars, educators, performers, composers, advocates, publishers, technologists, and administrators working in higher education as well as the public sector. In addition to the separate society programs, a series of special joint sessions are planned. Advocacy, composition, cultural diversity, ethnomusicology, gender issues, music education, musicology, classes for non-majors, pedagogy, performance, music theory, teacher training, the latest technologies, and world music will be explored in a variety of formats, including open discussions.

A special pre-conference workshop, sponsored by The International Association For Jazz Educators and The College Music Society, is planned this year.  This half-day special focus pre-conference will examine the successes and challenges of integrating and teaching jazz and improvisation in undergraduate music degree programs. The pre-conference theme - Are We Really In The Mix?: Integrating Jazz & Improvisation into Music Degree Programs, will be addressed in four separate sessions including a keynote address & panel discussion, lecture demonstration, an interactive breakout session (two sessions to run concurrently), and a brief closing general session.  To learn more, please refer to the “Program” section of the conference website.
The annual Charles Seeger lecture will be delivered by Judith Becker, Professor at the University of Michigan.

Join us for what promises to several exciting days of music, dialog, and discussion in a city like no other in the world!
